TWAIN
Technology Without An Interesting Name. A silly name to be sure, but it is the standard for software that interacts with scanners and related devices. Most graphics programs (Adobe Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, Corel Photopaint, etc etc) know how to talk to TWAIN drivers, so once you install the software for your scanner, all your graphics programs should be able to use the scanner.
