Cool Insect Facts
- Female mosquitoes buzz their wings at about 400 Hz (middle C)
- Stinging insects are all female. (The sting is derived from the
ovipositor, an egg laying device.)
- Blood sucking insects are usually female also, this is to get a
protein meal for their eggs.
- Bee, Wasp and Ant females can determine the sex of their offspring.
They store sperm in a special structure called a spermatheca. A fertilized
egg is female, an unfertilized egg is male. (So females are diploid, males
are haploid).
