Instructions for Fixing Most Network Problems
- NOTE: Many of you may have this problem in lab for some odd reason.
- Click on "Applications" then "system settings" then "network"
- It will ask for the root password, give it
- Make sure eth0 is highlighted
- Delete that connection (due to MAC address errors especially)
- click "new"
- Choose "ethernet"
- Choose the Intel ethernet card that is listed (or whatever you use at
home)
- Use DHCP
- MAKE SURE that "Automatically obtain DNS information from provider" is
checked, this causes DNS configuration problems in the lab if it is not
checked.
- save your changes and reactivate your network from the gui (click on
"activate"), or at the
prompt do the
following as root
- /sbin/ifdown eth0
- /sbin/ifup eth0
- AT HOME you will use this same utility. For dialup you will
use ppp, for most high speed you will create a NEW eth0 (you can delete
the
old one), and you will need to know whether or not your IPS uses DHCP and
all the other info to get it to work at home.
